How a 24 team single elimination bracket works
A 24 team knockout runs on a 32-slot frame: 5 rounds, 23 matches, 8 byes. Seeds 1 through 8 — exactly the top third — rest through round one, while seeds 9 to 24 play eight opening games: 9 vs 24, 10 vs 23, 11 vs 22, 12 vs 21, 13 vs 20, 14 vs 19, 15 vs 18 and 16 vs 17. The eight winners join the eight rested seeds in a perfectly full round of 16.
That two-act structure — a qualifying-style first round followed by a complete 16-team bracket — is why 24 works so well for club opens, martial arts tournaments and regional championships. The top seeds get a genuine reward without disappearing for half the event, and every round from the last 16 onward is full-strength with no byes anywhere.
Eight byes and the top-third rule
Giving byes to exactly the top third of the field is one of the most defensible cut lines in tournament design. It maps to how many leagues split promotion tiers, and it keeps the bye from being either a rarity (like at 14 or 15 teams) or an avalanche (like at 9). The seeding fight worth watching is at the 8/9 boundary: eighth place rests, ninth place plays seed 24 and one extra elimination game.
Because the round of 16 re-balances the draw completely, upsets in round one do not distort the bracket — the highest surviving seeds still meet the lowest in every subsequent round.
