How a 5 team single elimination bracket works
A 5 team knockout is drawn on an 8-slot frame: 3 rounds, 4 matches total, and 3 byes. Since five is three short of eight, three teams skip the opening round entirely. By universal seeding convention those free passes belong to the top three seeds, which leaves exactly one first-round game: seed 4 versus seed 5, effectively a play-in match for the right to face the No.1 seed in the semifinals.
From there the bracket behaves like a normal 4 team tournament. The play-in winner meets seed 1 in one semifinal, seeds 2 and 3 collide in the other, and the winners advance to the final. Four matches decide everything, and no entrant plays more than three games — a light schedule that fits comfortably into a single afternoon.
Why seeding matters most at five teams
No other small bracket punishes lazy seeding like this one. Three of five entrants receive a bye, so whoever lands on the 4 and 5 lines plays an extra match for no reward other than survival. If your five teams have any meaningful ranking — league standings, ladder position, last event’s results — use it, and give the play-in burden to the two weakest entrants as tradition demands. When the field is truly even, the Random draw option at least makes the extra game a matter of luck rather than favoritism.
Organizers who dislike the lopsided structure have two good outs. Recruit a sixth entrant and the bracket becomes noticeably fairer (two play-in games instead of one). Or run a 5 team round robin: ten games total, no byes, and a champion decided by record — better for leagues, worse for time-boxed events.
